Tooth Pain
There are a number of things that could be causing your pain. An Endodontist can examine the problem area and determine the source of the issue. Don’t let tooth pain ruin your day and keep you up at night. Nothing else matters when you are in serious pain!
Root Canals
What is a root canal?
The hard outside part of your tooth is called the crown. Inside that is soft tissue which is called the pulp. A root canal is a common procedure where a hole is made in the crown in order to access the pulp and remove the infected tissue. The hole is then filled temporarily.
Apicoetomy
In most cases, a root canal is all that is needed to save a tooth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, when this is not the case, your Endodontist will recommend surgery. An Apicoetomy or root-end resection is the most common procedure in these instances.
What is an Apicoetomy? An incision is made in the gums to allow access to the bone and surrounding affected tissue. The damaged tissues are removed along with the root tip. A root-end filling is placed to avoid reinfection, and the incision is closed. With time the bone heals around the root restoring full natural function.
Endodontic Retreatment
With regular care, your tooth that has had a root canal will last as long as your other natural teeth.
Once in a while, a tooth that has been treated may fail to heal or continue to cause you pain. If this is the case then Endodontic retreatment may be required.
What is Endodontic retreatment? The tooth will be reopened in order to remove the root canal filling material and thoroughly examine and clean the root canal of the problem tooth.
Once cleaned the tooth is sealed and a temporary filling is put in place. At this point, you would need to visit your regular dentist for a permanent filling or crown as soon as possible.
